Psoriasis In Children From Guidelines To Reality

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects 3% of the general population and can lead to metabolic syndrome and depression. One-third of the cases start in childhood, where the most common type is plaque psoriasis, and the lesions are usually thinner and smaller in diameter, located on the scalp, face, and flexural area. Phototherapy or systemic treatment is recommended for moderate to severe cases. Topical therapy is directed mainly to mild cases, and off-label drugs are used for systemic treatment. TNF blockers, Adalimumab, Etanercept, IL-12/23 Ustekinumab, Ixekizumab, or Secukinumab are registered in children, but topical corticosteroids should be used with caution. Topical calcineurin inhibitors are used off-label for psoriasis on the face and skin folds.
