About lentigo solaris (solar lentigo, lentigines):

-Occurs in sun exposed areas typically in individuals aged 50 and over

-Histologically, pigmentation is located in the epidermis, in the basal layer.  (Stratum basale)

-It is caused by an increased number of melanocytes who have a normal amount of melanin

 

 

Treatment options include:

-cryotherapy

chemical peels

 

 

Solar lentigines need to be distinguished from solar hyperpigmentation :

-It occurs in light skinned individuals

-It is most common after 50 years old

-It is difficult to treat
