Urticaria

-It was first suggested in 1000-2000 BC in China and was called “Feng Yin Zheng”. It is found in “The Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic”, by Huang Di Nei Jing

-It is a condition where lesions come and go (less than 24 hours) and are located on all parts of the body. (Fixed lesions should be taken more seriously and be caused by a vasculitis) -6 weeks duration is the time limit between acute and chronic urticaria.

-There is a mind-boggling number of causes causes but acute urticaria is most often due to foods, drugs, viruses…chronic urticaria has an autoimmune etiology in 30 to 40% of cases…HOWEVER MOST CAUSES OF URTICARIA ARE IDIOPATHIC.

-Respiratory compromise must be suspected if urticaria is extensive especially if there is associated Angioedema.
