Adjunct Professor Sharad Paul from the Auckland University of Technology also serves as a Senior Lecturer (skin cancer) University of Queensland, and Honorary Senior Lecturer (Surgery) at the University of Auckland. Professor Paul is a Fellow of the Skin Cancer College of Australasia and a Distinguished Fellow of the Royal NZ College of General Practitioners. In 2015, he was awarded the Ko Awatea International Excellence Award for Leading (Health) Improvement on a Global Scale with the citation noting his “role in improving skin cancer management, education and patient-centred care internationally, across several countries.” Dr Paul recently introduced the ground-breaking concept of Biodynamic Excisional Skin Tension (BEST) Lines that has been reviewed by the American Academy of Dermatology Journal (JAAD), and described by Nature Springer as the “first major new concept in skin tension lines since Langer’s cleavage lines in 1861, and an important work in the field of surgical foundations.” He is also the author of several books for popular audiences in the fields of skin, medicine, and also literary fiction. In 2012, he received the New Zealand Medical Associations highest award, The Chair’s Award, only awarded to one doctor across all specialties at one time.
